A young Great Horned Owl perches on its own along a cottonwood branch, staring down at the camera with wide golden eyes. It's still wrapped in fluffy, buff-colored down, but barred flight feathers are coming in along its wings and tail, a sign it's nearly ready to fly. Fresh spring leaves and a soft blue sky frame the owlet, which looks a little wobbly and very serious on its new perch.
